Veneers are a great way to freshen up your smile by hiding tooth imperfections. Veneers consist of a thin ceramic shell, which is used to cover your existing tooth and improve the appearance of your teeth. Veneers offer a cosmetic solution to common tooth imperfections including stains, chips, tooth misalignment, and small tooth gaps.

If you are considering veneers, you should request an appointment with your dentist so that your candidacy can be assessed.

Types of Veneers

Veneers can be made of porcelain or composite resin, with porcelain veneers being the more durable and less stain prone option.

Applying Veneers

Porcelain veneers typically take two sessions to apply, while resin veneers can generally be applied in one session.

Porcelain Veneers

Before applying your porcelain veneers, your dentist may treat your tooth with a local anesthetic. Once your tooth is numb, they will then gently remove a thin layer of enamel from your teeth to make room for your veneer.

Next, your dentist will make a mould of your teeth, which is used to create your custom made porcelain veneers, which will be applied during your next visit. Before you go home, your dentist may apply temporary veneers to replace the portion of your enamel that had to be removed. These temporary veneers will be worn until your permanent, custom veneers are ready to be applied.

Temporary veneers are fragile, so you will need to exercise caution while eating and while cleaning your teeth, so you don’t accidentally dislodge them.

During your next appointment, your dentist will remove your temporary veneers and treat your teeth with a mild chemical. The chemical treatment causes the surface of your teeth to become rough, making it easier for the porcelain veneers to stick to your teeth. Finally, your dentist will then affix your veneers to your teeth one by one using composite resin cement.

Before applying your composite resin veneers, your dentist will select a shade of resin that best matches your natural teeth so that the veneer blends in with the rest of your teeth.

Once it is time to apply your veneers, your dentist will apply a mild chemical to the front surface of your tooth to help the resin stick to your tooth enamel. Your dentist will then apply the composite resin to your tooth in layers, using a bright light to harden each layer before applying the next. Once the last layer has been applied and appropriately hardened your dentist will shape and polish your veneer so that it matches the form of your tooth. Composite resin veneers can provide you with a smooth, blemish-free cover for your tooth that blends in with the rest of your teeth to provide you with a natural look.

Are Veneers a Good Choice For Me?

Not everyone is a good candidate for veneers. In order to be a good candidate for veneers you should:

Caring for your Veneers

Veneers are permanent and cannot be removed. Teeth that have been treated with veneers, just like natural teeth, need to be brushed twice per day and flossed once per day. If your veneers are not placed correctly or fully sealed onto your tooth, your tooth can still become stained or develop cavities under your veneer.

You will need to be careful while biting or tearing into hard or chewy foods. You should avoid biting hard foods, like ice cubes, and avoid biting your nails. Hard or chewy foods, and biting your nails, can damage your veneers.

If your veneers become chipped, peel off, or have a cavity form under them, they will need to be redone. If you do not want to have your veneers redone, you will need to have a crown put on your tooth.
