What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that removes infected, inflamed, or dead tissue (called pulp) from inside your tooth. This helps stop the spread of infection, relieves discomfort, and can save the tooth from extraction.

Many people associate root canals with pain, but the procedure itself is usually no more uncomfortable than getting a dental filling. We use local anesthetic to ensure your comfort, and may recommend medication to manage any post-treatment sensitivity.

How a Root Canal Works

Most root canal treatments are completed in 1 or 2 appointments. A crown is often placed afterward to protect the tooth and restore its strength. Here’s how the treatment works:

  • We numb the area and gently access the inside of your tooth.
  • The infected pulp is removed, and the root canals are cleaned and shaped.
  • The space is filled with a natural material called gutta-percha.
  • The tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.with care and precision. We will always discuss your treatment options beforehand to help you make the best decision for your health.

The Crown Process

Crowns are custom-made caps that fit over your tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function. After a root canal, a crown helps protect the weakened tooth and prevent future damage. Crowns can also improve the look of worn, broken, or discoloured teeth.

Fitting a crown usually takes 2 visits:

  • First visit: We prepare the tooth, take impressions, and place a temporary crown.
  • Second visit: We replace the temporary crown with your custom-made permanent crown and make sure the fit, bite, and colour are just right.

If you require additional treatment, such as gum therapy, orthodontics, or a root canal, we’ll discuss your care plan with you in detail beforehand.

Types of Crowns We Offer

Each crown is carefully selected based on your specific needs, the location of the tooth, and your personal preferences. We offer a variety of materials to suit different situations:

  • Porcelain crowns: A popular choice for front teeth, porcelain provides a natural and lifelike look that blends beautifully with your smile.
  • Zirconia crowns: A very strong white ceramic, zirconia is an excellent option for back teeth where strength and durability are especially important.
  • Metal crowns: Made from gold alloys, these crowns are highly durable, biocompatible, and gentle on opposing teeth, though they are more visible than ceramic options.
  • Composite crowns: Tooth-coloured and cost-effective, composites offer a natural appearance but are more prone to staining and wear over time.
