Diving Into Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients feel at ease during dental treatments. It is especially helpful for those with dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or difficulty sitting through longer procedures.

Sedation can be used during many types of care, including:

  • Exams and cleanings
  • Fillings
  • Tooth extractions
  • Dental surgery
  • Other general or restorative procedures

Types of Sedation We Offer

Dental care should never feel out of reach because of fear or discomfort. At Riverwalk Dental, we offer several sedation options to help make your experience as stress-free as possible. Whether you’re feeling a bit uneasy or need extra support for a longer procedure, we’ll help you find the right level of sedation for your comfort and safety.

We offer oral sedation, along with access to minimal, moderate, and deep sedation, depending on your needs and the type of procedure.

This form of sedation involves taking a prescribed pill before your appointment. It helps reduce anxiety and makes you feel pleasantly drowsy, while still keeping you awake and able to respond.

You’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment if you are receiving oral sedation.

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mild sedative that’s inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. It helps you feel calm, relaxed, and at ease throughout your treatment while keeping you fully awake and aware.

The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, so you may be able to return to your day without delay, including driving yourself home in many cases.

This option is often ideal for patients with mild dental anxiety or those undergoing routine procedures.

These options are typically provided through IV or higher doses of oral medication. You may become drowsy or fall into a light sleep, but can still be gently awakened if needed.

These levels of sedation are typically reserved for more complex procedures or higher levels of anxiety and require a dentist with the right training.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

Sedation dentistry may be recommended if you:

  • Avoid the dentist due to anxiety or fear
  • Have sensitive teeth or a strong gag reflex
  • Require extensive dental work in one visit
  • Struggle to stay still during treatment
  • Have a low pain threshold

Patients with certain health conditions, such as obstructive sleep apnea or obesity, should speak with their dentist and family physician before choosing sedation.

If you’re interested in sedation dentistry, let us know when booking your appointment. We will review your health history, explain your options, and help you feel secure about your care.
